Summer Studio

Why should kids have all the summertime fun? Our Summer Studio offers three-week long creative workshops for adults. Dive deep into storytelling, learn to analyze scripts, or find your creative spark. Register for one workshop, or sample them all! Each workshop meets on a different weekday morning. Perfect for seniors, teachers, freelancers, entrepreneurs, college students, or anyone with a flexible summer schedule!

Creative Workshops for Adults

Classes

Playscript Reading Workshop

Just like a book club, only you'll be reading a selection of plays, both outside of and during class. The group will learn about their context, impact and form of storytelling as they enjoy getting to know a variety of characters and playwrights.​

Creativity Workshop

Have fun exploring your imagination and creative potential. Students will use exercises in creative writing, photography, sculpture and music to illustrate the world of creativity and access their own creative power. These exercises will illustrate core creative concepts, such as risk-taking, tolerating uncertainty, optimism, divergent thinking and the imagination.

Storytelling Workshop

If you love The Moth, and have always wanted to try your hand at storytelling, this class is for you. Learn about structure and practice performance skills to turn a personal experience into a polished, engaging, and affecting story.

Laura Ekstrand

Laura (she/her) is co-founder and artistic director of Vivid Stage, which began as Dreamcatcher Rep in 1994. She is an actor, director, playwright and teacher who has appeared on stages and screens for over 30 years. Laura is also a member of The Flip Side improv comedy team. She has worked at many other New Jersey Theatres including the Bickford Theatre, Centenary Stage, Luna Stage, Passage Theater, Pushcart Players, The Theater Project and 12 Miles West. In New York, Laura has appeared at Naked Angels, Ensemble Studio Theatre, and New Georges. Laura has worked as an actor in film and television, and is the host of Vivid Stage’s podcast. Her short and full-length plays have been produced at theatres around the country and online. Laura is a private monologue coach and holds a BA from Yale University and an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College. Laura is the Chair of the New Jersey Theatre Alliance Board of Trustees and a member of AEA, SAG-AFTRA and the Dramatists Guild. She is also a certified yoga instructor and enjoys a good hike

Phoebe Farber

Phoebe is a practicing psychotherapist (MSW, Ph.D.) who has worked with clients in a private practice for over 25 years.  She is a professor at Montclair State University, where she teaches a course on creativity, the creative process and ways to cultivate a creative mindset.  She is a co-founder of Building Creative Minds, an organization that leads residencies and workshops in creative thinking as a tool for resilience, rejuvenation and empowerment.  She has travelled to England, Scotland, Israel and Sweden to lead classes in accessing the creative spark that exists within all of us.  Phoebe is a Fulbright Scholar and co-author of the upcoming textbook Igniting the Spark: Activating your Creative Mind.  

Withdrawls, absences, and refunds

All tuition payments must be received one week before the class begins. After this date, please contact us for availability.

Should you find it necessary to withdraw from your class, the following refund schedule will apply:
​
Withdrawal 20 days before class begins:     100% refund    
Withdrawal 10 days before class begins:       50% refund
Withdrawal 5 days before class begins:         25% refund
​
No refund for withdrawal fewer than 5 days before class begins.
