Going Clear: Movie Screening Fundraiser with director Alex Gibney
Thursday, May 21st at 7:00PM at the Summit Elks Club.
Have you heard about the new Scientology expose that just started running on HBO? From Wikipedia: Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief is a 2015 documentary film about Scientology directed by Alex Gibney, based on Lawrence Wright's 2013 book, Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison of Belief. Produced by HBO, the film premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. It received widespread praise from critics for its deconstruction of the church's claims through a combination of presenting a condensed history of Scientology and its founder, L. Ron Hubbard, how celebrities interact with the church, the stories of a number of ex-members, and the abuse and exploitation that they described seeing and experiencing.
The Church of Scientology responded vehemently to the film, complaining to film critics about their reviews and denouncing the film-makers and their interviewees. Going Clear was released in a limited number of theaters on March 13, 2015 and aired on HBO on March 29, 2015. It was a major ratings success and by mid-April 2015 had attracted 5.5 million viewers, making it the second most-watched HBO documentary in the past decade.)
Academy Award Winning Documentarian Alex Gibney , who lives in Summit, has graciously agreed to appear at a 7:00pm screening of the movie. Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion with Alex and with Former Scientologist Paul Grosswald.
Cost: $20 at the door. Cash bar. Light refreshments served. All money raised will be divided between the non-profit organizations Dreamcatcher Repertory Theatre, Speak Up Summit, and Intellectual Freedom Foundation, a cult-fighting group. All are welcome.
